To Have & To Hold is a 'musicmentory' to celebrate the age of vinyl records...including interviews, fresh graphics and good music. Directed by Jony Lyle for Goosepimple Productions 2010.

Exploration #6 - London Pirate Radio

Pirate radio is everywhere in London, born in the 60’s from rusting anti-aircraft towers in the mouth of the Thames. Today’s broadcasts are hidden in plain sight, transmitting from secret tower block studios via homemade rooftop antennas. We put our boots on and went exploring.

Moodymann at red bull music academy 2010

I LOVE this guy's philosphy!

Rollerball enigma and silhouetted man-on-the-mic Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann is one of the most enigmatic and charismatic figures that house music ever bred. Despite his refusal to give interviews and play the press-and-promo game, Kenny’s voice has been clearly amongst the loudest, when it comes to preserving the rich heritage of Afro-American music, while fighting the music industry powers that be. Blessed with an immaculate way of sampling, he takes stems from blues and soul, and respectfully takes them onto the next level – just check his Tribute (To The Soul We Lost) ode to Marvin Gaye for proof. From his dark and dusty deep house tunes on Peacefrog, Planet E and his own KDJ label, to his more recent outings on the R&B-drenched Mahogani Music imprint as well as his 2009 sure-fire anthem Freaky MF, Moodymann's fingerprint has stayed unmistakable. Even a so-called techno tune like Dem Young Sconies sounds like nothing and nobody else on this planet. You can't kick this feeling when it hits!

Al Jarreau 1976 - Take Five

Addison Groove (aka Headhunter) - Footcrab (on Swamp81, Loefah's label)

I love this tune! When he came down to Brussels at the end of January Headhunter played a GhettoTech/Booty set. Now i understand perfectly why he did that. this tune is the perfect combination of Ghettotech/Booty with Dubstep.

KODE 9 at red bull music academy 2010

If you want to know about the various planes of the sonic world around us, you could do worse than turning to much respected DJ and producer Kode 9.

Steve Goodman has long since been the proprietor of the freshest beats in the scene, espousing the newest sounds via his Hyperdub label and encouraging such talented souls as Burial, Zomby and King Midas Sound.

But Kode9 also has the mind to match the music. Apart from running his label, producing, collaborating and DJing, he has a Ph.D in Philosophy, spent time studying "rave culture, cybernetics, postmodernism and afrofuturism" in the highly respected research collective and think tank the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, and has just published a book "Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear".

The thinking man's raver, Kode 9 dropped by the Academy for a cup of tea, a listening session and a chat. Don't worry though, he's not as serious as he sounds...

Check out hyperdub boss Kode9 drops in for a chat at Red Bull Music Academy here.

"In music, when you do something new, something original, you're an amateur. Your imitators - these are the professionals.

It is these imitators who are interested not in what the artist did, but the means which he used to do it. This is where craft emerges as an absolute, an authoritarian position that divorces itself from the creative pulse of the originator. The imitator is the greatest enemy of originality. The "freedom" of the artist is boring to him, because in freedom he cannot reenact the role of the artist.

There is, however, another role he can and does play. It is this imitator, this "professional" that makes art into culture."
